These are full-size rubbings of young maple tree trunks on muslin. When young,
the points at which branches are cut off heal over and form into uncanny images
of eyes. The impotence suggested by an eye that sees nothing is a powerful
image. I wanted to maintain this impotence, but take it further by creating
trees that have no strength or solidity. Light passes through the muslin,
creating a ghostlike quality. They are all separate and can be arranged several
ways; here, they form a grove a person can stand in.
