Forest of Eye Trees

18 separate elements, each 4” to 6” in diameter and between 64” and 82” high.
As arranged, 82”h x 96”w x 72”d.
Fabric, graphite, wood, acetate

These are full-size rubbings of young maple tree trunks on muslin. When young, the points at which branches are cut off heal over and form into uncanny images of eyes. The impotence suggested by an eye that sees nothing is a powerful image. I wanted to maintain this impotence, but take it further by creating trees that have no strength or solidity. Light passes through the muslin, creating a ghostlike quality. They are all separate and can be arranged several ways; here, they form a grove a person can stand in.
